While playing at home is an invaluable vehicle for the child’s learning and development, it is considerably different than play therapy with a trained professional.
Play therapy is a respected child treatment method that uses the child’s natural language of play to understand the child’s hurts and needs.
Depending upon the situation Dr. Turner may suggest or set up a play setting for the child to observe his or her needs. For example, a family of puppets may face a situation, or interact in a way that will bring out the child’s inner world.
Once she develops more of an understanding of the child’s inner needs, Dr. Turner then plays interactively with the child to help him or her heal, develop understanding, learn skills and tools, or express feelings. For example, jointly creating a mean monster that “hurts kids” with the child, then throwing bean bags at it may facilitate a child’s expression of anger and grief over a traumatic event.
